Iodine Update May 7, 2008

Filed under: iodine, iodoral, melasma, supplements, thyroid, weight loss — cheeseslave @ 7:03 am

I’ve been taking Iodoral for two and a half weeks now.

My resting temperature (taken first thing in the morning) used to range between 97.5 to 98.0.

Now it has stabilized at 98.6. It has been 98.6 every morning for four or five days.

And I lost 5 pounds. I was back up to 154 and am down to 149 now.

I suppose this could be the GAPS diet, too. But I think it is my thyroid. If your temperature does not get high enough, your metabolism is too slow and you can’t burn the calories.

I have a lot more energy. I can go all day now — gardening, running errands, working, whatever — instead of feeling like I need to rest on the couch.

The tingling/numbness in my hands/fingers is almost completely gone.

I am taking 50 mg of Iodoral each day (I will reduce this to 12.5 after a month or two).

I am also taking the following Standard Process products (3-4 tablets of each daily):

Catalyn (3 per day)
Cataplex F (3)
Thytrophin PMG (3)
Immunoplex (2)
Adrenal Gland (1-2)

I am taking 1 New Chapter whole food selenium tablet (to help with the iodine uptake). And 6 Solgar liver tablets. And 2 Biokult per day.

I may start taking a zinc supplement since I am reading a lot about high copper causing melasma. If my melasma doesn’t start to clear up, I will start taking zinc.

You do know that your basal temperature should follow a predictable pattern per your hormonal cycle? With a waking temperature at around regular daytime temps, you should be post-ovulation. Pre-ovulation, it is usually below this. Hope this isn’t too nosy.

Oh you are right about that. I have a chart in one of my books… I will look to see what it says.

You know I think I’m supposed to be taking my temperature throughout the day as well. That is what Dr. Rind says…

Yes here it is he says to take your temp every few hours throughout the day…

I agree with Anna. Are you familiar with the basal temperature and the way it changes depending on where you are in your cycle? Do a search on Natural Family Planning and you should be able to find a sample chart.

    I just did… it said:

“Basal body temperature (BBT) is a nonintrusive way to predict ovulation. Since a woman’s temperature is generally lower before ovulation and higher afterwards, the method charts fertility through daily temperature measurements.

Most women have a BBT between 97 and 97.5 degrees Fahrenheit before ovulation and 97.6 to 98.6 degrees after. By keeping a daily record of her temperature, a woman may detect a dip right before ovulation, representing her most fertile time.”

I am going to buy a BBT thermometer (it is more accurate) and start taking my temp every 3 hours like Dr. Rind recommends.

How funny, I just posted about natural family planning today before I even read these comments!

Thanks for creating such an interesting and informational blog! I was just wondering if you’ve noticed any changes in your melasma, now that you’ve been on the Iodine for a while.
