After rereading the LJ Noo Poo community basics, I figured out why my hair looks like I dipped my head in a vat of melted butter.
Apparently we live in a red zone. Los Angeles has extremely hard water. It’s also highly chlorinated. Which explains why I feel itchy when I get out of the shower that I have to slather oil and lotion all over otherwise I will itch and scratch all day and leave a trail of white flakes.
This is why you have to use harsh detergents on your hair when you have hard water. It really dries out your scalp which makes you produce more oil!
I also read on LJ No Poo that the 5th and 6th weeks are often the worst.
So today I did not put my head under the shower. I rinsed first with a cup of distilled water and a teaspoon or so of white vinegar. Then I “washed” with 2 cups of distilled water with 1/2 to 1 tsp of sea salt. Then rinsed again with the white vinegar/distilled water.
If you don’t want to use distilled water (kind of a pain), you have to get a shower filter. I have to do that anyway, because, as I mentioned above, I am sick of the itchies and scratchies! Of course, we are talking about getting a whole-house system so there is a lot more research to be done. I’ll use distilled water until I get it figured out.
I can’t tell what my hair is doing yet because it’s still wet. I may be wearing a baseball hat again today. But hopefully the distilled water will solve this problem in time.

there are some awesome salt water softing systems that work really well. we have hard water here too, but its natural from the limestone cliffs near by where our city’s well water comes from. when you boil water it removes the chlorine and the calcium deposits (they stay on your pan– citric acid gets mineral deposits off) so you dont have to buy special water, but you will have to boil often!
the grosses water ever is in glendale, its horrible smells like garlic and bad food, in fact, it was rated one of worst city waters in the country!
Hmm — another use for citric acid!
Glendale, huh. I had a weasly ex-boyfriend who grew up there. He has very bad skeletal formation. This is what Weston Price said is happening as a result of our modern diet.
He had narrow face and shoulders, wide hips (for a man — women’s hips become more narrow on a bad diet), very crooked teeth (due to narrowed palette).
Probably mostly due to the all-junk-food diet his mother fed him. But perhaps the water played a part as well.
You probably don’t have fluoride in your water, either.
ohhhh no flouride here. its banned in most of europe for the water. i think just the brits still have it. and look at their teeth!!! my gawd. you think glendales bad, check out austin powers!
years ago france used to put flouride in the table salt, but not any more. umm, its bad for you to swallow. why the WHO wont change their recommendations on that i dont know.
many states are now opting out of flouride in their water.
Yes, Seth and I were talking last night over dinner about how there is no fluoride in the water in Europe. He said last night, “Maybe we should move abroad.”
Ahhh! Fun! I would be up for that.
Of course the grandparents would not like that but there would just have to be more traveling.
PS: My ex DID have teeth like Austin Powers. Not QUITE that bad but he had had braces, etc. If he had let them go unchecked, he would have had an instant Halloween costume every year — just smile! (Yes it’s true I am not very nice about him but he was very very mean to me.)
Ah, by the way… this is totally off the topic of teeth and fluoride…
Do you know how I could get some French language DVDs for kids? I want to start playing them for Kate. I want her to learn French and Spanish in addition to English.
Should I try to order from Amazon France?
And can you recommend any good ones? I was looking into that Muzzy program for learning languages. But I would like some children’s shows similar to Sesame Street but all in French.
(I need to learn too — especially if we are going to move.
